The Shades, a Phantasy by Vladimir G. Korolenko

The next book on our list is The Shades, a Phantasy by Vladimir G. Korolenko.  Discussion will begin February 20, 2012.  I couldn't find a cover photo for the story, so I am posting a picture of the author instead.  However, I did find the story online at http://www.classicreader.com/book/2151/1.

Something Happened by Joseph Heller

Norm announced recently that since some book club members have already read Anna Karenina, he was adding Something Happened by Joseph Heller as an alternate book for the month. Book club members can read it in addition to or instead of Anna Karenina.  Discussion starts March 1, same as Anna Karenina.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (January, 2012)

The recommended translation is by Richard Pevear  Larissa Volokhonsky.  Norm very generously gave us two months to read this one.  Discussion starts March 1, 2012.

The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck

Norm was inspired to choose this book when Dr. White cited Pearl S. Buck as a modern author who will be read by future generations.

Wise Blood by Flannery O'Conner

Norm said “maybe we should read something written by a lady author for a change?” Katy said “Wise Blood!” and he agreed.

Go Down, Moses by William Faulkner

This book was chosen by Robert (Old Strings) for no other reason than he happened to glance up and see it on his bookshelf. The discussions were good, but it’s a pity they didn’t go on longer.

Moby-Dick by Herman Melville

With Moby Dick, it became apparent that we would be reading the classics from here on out. The discussion of the book stalled for a few days, as Norm got the idea that he’d had the whole book wrong for years and so needed to re-read it. What Norm was actually talking about was never made clear, but we were treated to a wonderful webcast interview with Sarah’s father, professor of American literature and expert on Herman Melville, Dr. White.

The Moviegoer by Percy Walker

The third book read by the group.

Norm said he’d hated the book the first time he read it years ago. A few years later, he read it, again and still didn’t like it, but he couldn’t quite walk away from it. Eventually, he realized that he’d made the mistake of confusing the author with the narrator. Every time he reads it, he likes it more.
